Workshop on Berry Production in Changing Climate Conditions and Cultivation Systems

Geisenheim, Germany, 29th to 31st of October 2008

in the context of COST-Action 863: "Euroberry Research: from Genomics to Sustainable Production, Quality and Health" and supported by ISHS

The objective of the workshop is to discuss the future production of Fragaria, Rubus, Ribes and Vaccinium in Europe; under the impact of climate change and modern cultivation systems. Both topics stands for its own, however, climate change with increasing temperature, CO2 values and water stress will also required an adoption of the cultivation system. The workshop will cover all research areas relevant to climate change and berry cultivation systems, e.g. breeding strategies, berry physiology and sustainable cultural management, quality and nutritional values of berry fruits, dynamics of diseases, pests and beneficials.

Invited speaker: Climate change
J.M. Legave, INRA Bordeaux: Climate change in Europe and its impact on berry phenology, physiology and production

H. G. Jones and R. Brennan, University of Dundee at SCRI, Scotland: Possible impacts of climate change on soft fruit production: the example of winter chill in Ribes

Adam Dale, University of Guelph, Ontario Canada: How climate change could influence breeding and modern production systems in berry crops

Fanny Pitsioudis, Proefcentrum Fruitteelt vzw afdeling Tongeren, Belgium: Early and late production of raspberry, blackberry and red currants

Erika Varkonyi-Gasic, HortResearch, New Zealand: Molecular characterisation of flowering in perennial fruit

Session
To increase the scientific knowledge on berry production in changing climate conditions and cultivation systems, different topics and aspects will be discussed in the following sessions:

  • Impacts on breeding strategies
  • Impacts on berry physiology and cultural management
  • Impacts on quality and nutritional values of berry fruits
  • Impacts on dynamics of diseases, pests and beneficials
  • Final discussion: Further research requirements

Language: The official language of the workshop will be English.
